Keep Your Friends Close

Kay on Mar 16th 2008 06:38 am

After you've signed up with an online dating service, and you've started corresponding with and meeting guys, remember to keep your girlfriends close.

They are the ones that will help you keep your head on straight and your ass out of trouble. Trust me on this.

Mandi has been my main sounding board for guys. She is quite cynical and sees straight through the bs guys dish out (except, of course, in her own case - which is to be expected). She points out the glaring red flags I refuse to notice and picks up on the subtle stuff too. Her advice on how to handle situations is always spot-on.

Mandi on Mar 15th 2008 07:37 am

So you have made it past the initial email contact, the instant messaging and the first phone call. You meet him for the first date and WOW! He’s a great guy. No red flags seem to be going off. Of course if this is happening, you want to make sure he knows you're interested, but not come on too strong.

How do we strike the balance between bewitching enchantress and deranged stalker? Subtle flirting and non-verbal communication can be key to letting the man know he won’t be facing rejection if he asks you out again. Come on too strong, they run for the hills, not enough enthusiasm, they assume you aren’t interested. So here are a few insights to the art of flirtation.

How to Identify a Jerk

Mandi on Mar 13th 2008 06:27 am

Anyone who has tried online dating or been set up on a blind date has probably met one.

The Jerk.

These are the people who never learned tact or even how to behave in polite society. Now, for the poor innocent who’s stuck in a social setting with the Jerk, this can be awkward, humiliating and uncomfortable.

So, what do you do when you find yourself in this situation?

First, you need to determine which specific breed of Jerk you are with.

Red Flags Common to Men and Women

Kay on Mar 12th 2008 06:44 am

An amusing article about red flags from a woman's viewpoint, then a man's, made me realize that most red flags are common to both genders.

So without further ado, beyond the givens, such as personal hygiene, here's a gender-neutral random list of red flags to watch for:

A person who:

  • doesn't call when they say they will
  • is very critical
  • says negative things about their former spouse
  • after a third or fourth date, is online chatting with other possibilities by the time you get home
  • writes, expresses interest, and then disappears off the face of the earth
