Dating – a Numbers Game

Let the statistics guide you in your search for a lasting love. 10 facts every single person should know from the book Sex in America: A Definitive Survey :

1. 44 percent of adult Americans are single, according to U.S. Census figures. This means there are over 100 million unattached people out there – there’s got to be a match for us somewhere in that 100 million!

2. Statistically, the odds favor guys: There are 86 unmarried men for every 100 unmarried women. In some regions the gender ratio favors women, especially in the West. Paradise, Nevada, a suburb 10 miles from Las Vegas, has 118 unmarried men for every 100 unmarried women! Other cities where there’s a positive ratio for women are Austin, Fort Lauderdale,  Tempe, Arizona, Sunnyvale and Santa Ana, California. The ones in Tempe seem to be mostly college students. I guess that means a move to Florida to find the "old" guys.

3. The best place for single people: New York, where 50% of state residents are unmarried, and Washington, D.C., where an amazing 70% of the population is single. Don’t move to Idaho, where 60% of people are married, or Utah, where 59% of people are married.

4. Think you’ll find love while perched on a barstool? Nope. Only 9% of women and 2% of men say they’ve found a relationship at a bar or club. Good for a one night stand, but nothing lasting.

5. Want to let someone know you’re interested? 51% of people use flattery. Touching is a tactic used by 25% of single people; 23% send the word out through a friend. I’ve always wanted to wink at them, but never had the nerve.

6. Online dating is huge: 40 million Americans use online dating services; that’s about 40% of our entire U.S. single population. Here’s a great statistic – 1 in 8 people found their mate through an online dating service last year! Keep the faith, girl.

7. Profiles with photos are a must. Women and men who post their photos receive more than twice as many emails as those without photos, according to a study published by economists at MIT and University of Chicago. Go fix your hair, put on some makeup, and find a friend with a digital camera.

8. First impressions count: Men make up their minds fast – only 15 minutes to decide if a woman is worth a second date. Women, on the other hand, ponder whether to get together again for an hour or so. Obviously we’re more selective.

9. What are your online odds? One in 12 guys have the potential to be "the one." Apparently I’ve overlooked a lot of potentials and didn’t even know it!

10. If you’re relationship is over: An estimated 48% of online daters say their breakups have happened via email. Call it rude, gutless, or just plain convenient, but it happens a lot. Don’t feel picked on if it happens to you.
